My Body is Your Body is Everybody is Nobody

My Body is Your Body is Everybody is Nobody are a series of videos where participants are encouraged to mark the performer with charcoal, thus leaving evidence of the interaction on the performer’s skin for three minutes. Participants may also try to remove evidence of their touch by washing the performer’s face. The performer will then touch the participant’s face with charcoal for three minutes. The videos will be silent and shot in black and white. Cropping will be portrait style to capture micro expressions, gaze, and physical reaction to being touched.

Touch is an ephemeral, visceral sense that usually, unless done with great force, leaves no visible evidence. My Body is Your Body is Everybody is Nobody allows the participants to see the evidence of their interaction on the performer and vice versa. It becomes a silent conversation full of implications of trust, connection, power, and sexuality.

The title My Body is Your Body is Everybody is Nobody is meant to invoke a sense of connection and dissolution of self. While the artist is the same in all the of the videos, she could be anyone. These interactions could be those between any two people at any given time.

There are also larger conversations around consent in these videos. While performed in the safety of a studio, unscripted physical interactions can lead to uncomfortable moments. Miscommunications of boundaries, unread responses, uneasy feelings are also part of this project. Being touched by a stranger or someone who is not trusted can trigger micro changes in the body that the camera will record.
